Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is part of the newly released METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 2, and we wanted to see how the HD Collection version of this one holds up on the Steam Deck. The good news is that it holds up very well.
60 FPS with barely any settings to touch
There isn’t much of a graphics menu to dig through here. Peace Walker is pretty much a take-it-as-it-comes situation on Steam Deck, and thankfully what it comes with is great. We’re seeing a consistent 60 FPS throughout, and the game feels smooth and clean while you’re moving the camera around and taking in the environments. For a collection built around older titles, it’s a genuinely pleasant surprise how well this one has been optimized for the handheld.
Catching up on a piece of Metal Gear history
We’ve talked before about how much we loved Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater when we covered Metal Gear Solid 4 on Steam Deck, and Peace Walker ties directly into that part of the story. We hadn’t gotten around to playing this one when it originally released, so getting the chance to experience it now, running well on the Deck, is a real treat. If you’re in the same boat and skipped it the first time around, this is a great excuse to finally see how it connects to the rest of Big Boss’s story.
What’s in the Master Collection Vol. 2
Peace Walker arrives here as part of METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol. 2, which pairs it with Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. Konami has kept the package light on bells and whistles as far as PC-specific options go, but that simplicity works in its favor on Steam Deck: there’s very little to configure, and what’s here just runs.
If you’ve been holding off on Peace Walker or never got around to it on PSP, this is a strong way to jump in. It’s smooth, it’s stable at 60 FPS, and it’s an easy recommendation for anyone working through the series on Steam Deck. Let us know if you end up picking this one up.
