By Silent Hill: Townfall is Screen Burn’s new story-driven horror entry, published by KONAMI and Annapurna Interactive, and follows Simon Ordell as he returns to the island town of St. Amelia to set things right. I put it through its paces on the Steam Machine at 1080p, 1440p and 4K, and the big surprise is that 4K at 60 FPS is actually achievable with the right settings.
1080p: Ultra with ray tracing
At 1080p, I went all out, using the Ultra preset with ray tracing enabled and FSR set to Balanced. With these settings the game runs close to 60 FPS, and it looks really good. The image is clear and the visuals pop more thanks to Ultra and ray tracing working together.
If you want a locked, consistent 60 FPS, dropping the preset to High or Medium will get you there. But if you want to max everything out at 1080p to show off what the game can do, Ultra is definitely doable on the Steam Machine.
1440p: High preset, ray tracing off
For 1440p, I kept FSR on Balanced and switched to the High preset. I turned ray tracing off here because it was too demanding at this resolution, but the extra clarity of 1440p more than makes up for it compared to 1080p.
With these settings, you hit close to 60 FPS, and it looks great. Just like at 1080p, dropping the preset to Medium gives you a consistent 60 FPS if that matters more to you, but High is still a very good experience overall.
4K: 60 FPS with FSR Ultra Performance
This is where I was really shocked. At 4K I used the Medium preset across the board with FSR set to Ultra Performance, and the Steam Machine holds 60 FPS.
Ultra Performance usually isn’t the best-looking FSR mode, but for some reason it actually looks quite nice in this game. Combined with a smooth 60 FPS at 4K, this is the setup I’d recommend if you’re playing on a big TV.
Final thoughts
I’m having a good time with Silent Hill: Townfall, and it plays and runs really well on the Steam Machine. Whether you want Ultra with ray tracing at 1080p, sharper visuals at 1440p, or a surprisingly clean 4K 60 FPS, there’s a setup that works.
