OZARK is a dark 2.5D action horror game from indie studio ALTER-BOY, and we’ve been playing it on the Steam Deck. It isn’t very demanding, so it runs well on Valve’s handheld with the right settings. Here’s how it plays and what we recommend.
Best settings for Steam Deck
We went with the Low graphics preset. The game doesn’t include its own frame generation, but it doesn’t really need it. With these settings you can hold 40 FPS, and that’s the target we recommend. There isn’t a lot going on on screen at once, and for a side-scrolling game 40 FPS feels good.
If you want a higher frame rate, you can add a third-party option like MAKO Frame Generation. We don’t think it’s necessary, though, because the game already plays well at 40 FPS.
Gameplay impressions
OZARK is an interesting mix of a third-person shooter and a Metroidvania. We’re still making up our minds about it, but so far it’s been fun on the Steam Deck and the gameplay is pretty addictive. Getting up close to enemies and blasting them with a shotgun feels especially satisfying.
Final thoughts
OZARK is an easy one to recommend for Steam Deck owners. Use the Low preset, aim for 40 FPS, and you’re set. Are you planning to play it? Let us know what settings you’re using.
