It didn’t take long, considering Microsoft said they weren’t going to do much for Linux, but Minecraft Dungeons 2 is now working perfectly fine on the Steam Deck. The Mojang Studios and Double Eleven dungeon crawler had issues on the Deck at its Steam launch, and within days those have been fixed. It now works out of the box, and I fully expect it to pick up a Verified badge soon.
Out of the box, no tweaks needed
There’s nothing to set up here. You don’t need any custom Proton versions or launch options, and signing in with your Microsoft account works just fine on the Deck. You simply install it and play, which is exactly what you want from a game heading for Verified status.
Performance and best settings
Performance isn’t quite as good as I’d expect for a game with this art style. Even on the medium graphics preset, it didn’t quite hold 90fps in the early battle sections. I still recommend sticking with medium, though, because low really doesn’t look nice. It messes with the lighting, and the low-quality shadows just don’t look good in this game at all.
The sweet spot is medium graphics with a 60fps cap. Even with tons of monsters, effects and potions going off at once, it stays smooth and I was having a good time. That should hold up just as well in multiplayer, so you shouldn’t run into any issues keeping 60fps on the Steam Deck with friends.
The 24fps cutscenes
One odd issue remains: the cutscenes play at a cinematic 24fps. It does feel like this is by design rather than a Deck problem, but jumping between smooth gameplay and 24fps cutscenes makes for a pretty jarring experience.
Final thoughts
It’s great to see Minecraft Dungeons 2 fixed so quickly after its rocky start on the Steam Deck. A couple of quirks aside, it’s more than good enough to be Verified, and now everybody can play it happily on their handhelds. Let us know in the comments if you’re diving into it on Steam or streaming it via Game Pass instead.
