Hexologic Steam Deck news: colourful key art from the free hexagon puzzle game

Hexologic is free on Steam: Verified on Steam Deck and Steam Machine

By Gaming On Steam ·

Hexologic Steam Deck news is the good kind tonight: MythicOwl’s hexagon logic puzzler is free to keep on Steam right now, until 31 October 2026 at 5pm UK time. Claim it from the Hexologic Steam store page before then and it stays in your library for good. Even better, Valve rates it Verified on both Steam Deck and Steam Machine.

It normally costs £4.29, so this isn’t a huge saving, but it’s a very well-liked little game. 96% of its 690 Steam user reviews are positive, which gives it an Overwhelmingly Positive rating. It first came out on 29 May 2018, and a relaxed, pick-up-and-put-down puzzle game like this is exactly the sort of thing I like having installed on a handheld.

How to get Hexologic free on Steam

There’s nothing complicated about it. Open the store page, use the button to add Hexologic to your account, and it’s yours to keep after the promotion ends. Steam’s own wording is “free to keep when you get it before 31 Oct @ 10:00am”, which is Pacific time. That works out at 5pm in the UK, because our clocks have already gone back. You can claim it from the Steam store on your Deck or Steam Machine, or from any PC or browser signed in to the same account.

There is one small catch, and Steam spells it out: games claimed during free-to-keep promotions don’t drop Steam Trading Cards. Steam also notes that the offer is available while supplies last. Beyond that, the store page lists Steam achievements, Steam Cloud, Steam Workshop support and a level editor, so you’re getting the full game rather than a cut-down version.

What is Hexologic?

Hexologic is a logic puzzle game that takes Sudoku-style rules and moves them onto hexagonal grids. Each hex holds a number of dots, and your job is to combine them along three possible directions so that each line adds up to the number shown at its edge. It doesn’t rely on any text to explain itself, so it’s easy to learn, but MythicOwl promises puzzles that are challenging without being unbeatable.

Steam lists six game worlds, each with its own gameplay mechanics, and over 90 levels in total. The whole thing is wrapped in colourful, soft art and an atmospheric soundtrack that’s meant to put your mind at ease. It’s developed and published by MythicOwl, and Steam files it under Casual, Indie and Strategy.

Hexologic Steam Deck news: what the Verified rating means

Valve’s Steam Deck compatibility report gives Hexologic its top Verified rating, and all four of its checks pass. The default controller configuration is fully functional, the on-screen controller glyphs match the Deck’s own buttons, the interface text is legible on the 800p screen, and the default configuration performs well. In other words, Valve’s testers found nothing you need to tweak before you start playing.

That matches what the store page suggests. Steam lists full controller support, including DualShock and DualSense pads, and offers both Windows and Linux versions. The requirements are tiny, too: the minimum spec asks for 2GB of RAM, a 512MB graphics card and just 300MB of storage, so it will barely dent even a 64GB Deck.

Steam Machine and Steam Frame compatibility

On Steam Machine, Valve’s report also says Verified. Its three checks are all passed: the default controller configuration is fully functional, the controller glyphs match the device and the default configuration performs well. Steam lists Remote Play on TV support as well, and a calm puzzle game on the big screen with a controller in hand sounds like a nice way to wind down in the evening.

Steam Frame is the one gap. Valve hasn’t rated Hexologic for Steam Frame yet, so there’s no official verdict either way. It isn’t a VR game, so on the headset it would only ever be a flat game on a virtual screen rather than anything built for VR. I’d treat the Deck and Machine ratings as the real story for now and keep an eye on the store page in case a Frame rating appears.

Should you grab it?

For nothing, it’s an easy yes. Even if you only dip in for a few levels, it’s Verified on the Deck and the Machine, it takes up almost no space, and it has a strong track record with players. If smaller games like this are your thing, my round-up of the best Steam Deck Next Fest demos has plenty more to try. And if you play on a Steam Machine connected to the TV, my Couch PiP guide shows how to keep a video playing in the corner while you work through a puzzle.

Just don’t leave it too late. Hexologic is free to keep on Steam until 31 October 2026 at 5pm UK time, and after that it goes back to its normal price. Head to the Steam store page and add it to your library while you can.
